The worlds of science and video games are both extremely concerned with the fate of humanity. Dystopian games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Fallout, and Deux Ex have been widely successful over the years, drawing us into their stories with bleak warnings about the folly of man. The specific moral you're supposed to glean from the fall of society differs from game to game, but it almost always pertains to drastic circumstances designed to show off the best and the worst of humanity.

Meanwhile, scientists have been working for years to save us from exactly the types of crises these games predict. The major focus of their research is often the most pressing long-term danger humanity is staring down every day: climate change. Just a quick Google search will provide dozens of examples of innovative technology created to generate green energy or help clean the planet. You might come across the sidewalk in London, which turns kinetic energy into electricity, or the plant walls on Mexico City's highways. These days, the line between fact and fiction seems to be becoming more and more blurred, as the scientific inventions designed to combat climate change are starting to look awfully familiar - and for fans of Horizon Zero Dawn, awfully ominous.

The Forest Ranger Druids are one such example, imagined up by industrial designer Segev Kaspi. If you're not already intrigued by the badass name, you'll be enthralled by the conceptual photos.

This project aims to rehabilitate forests with the help of three different models of robots: Chunk, the mower, Dixon, the planter, and Rikko, the monitor. Each bot could operate on its own or as a unit with the others and would actually adapt depending on the part of the world it was in. Animal robots, invented with environmentalism in mind? Haven't we been here before?

In Horizon Zero Dawn, Aloy's spear would already be out. The game takes place in the distant future, after the collapse of civilization due to our own hubris, with robots roaming the land as freely as animals do. Most of them are meant to help an artificial intelligence named Gaia rebuild the planet's ecosystem, just like the Forest Ranger Druids. Unfortunately, these robots end up rebelling and fighting against humanity, rather than helping us. Here's hopign the Forest Ranger Druids don't get any funny ideas.

It's not just that the Druids and the Machines are both robot animals either - they bear a striking physical resemblance to each other. If you switched out the tops, Dixon would look a lot like a Shell Walker.

Give a chainsaw to a Strider and it's basically a Chunk.

Horizon Zero Dawn's story is all about figuring out why these robots, most of whom were intended to help the planet and its residents, turned against you. By the time the game is set, all of the animal-like bots are attacking on sight and getting more hostile by the day. If we're not careful, Chunks might end up getting bored with trees and taking that chainsaw to our faces instead. How effective will Aloy's spear be then, eh?

I have to admit, it's cool to think that Horizon might have managed to accurately predict even a small aspect of technology in the future. Think of all the failed predictions around Y2K, or the brain specialist in Paris who told The New York Times in 1904 that the human mind wouldn't be able to keep up with the high speeds of cars.

While the suggested Re-iceberg-isation Submarine isn't as anthropomorphized as the Forest Ranger Druids, it too has its own undeniable charm. This device floats out into the Arctic, where climate change has caused ice to melt and, subsequently, sea levels to rise. It takes in water and forms those adorable hexagons of ice, which scientists have affectionately dubbed "ice babies."

While it sounds easy to just freeze some extra ice to make up for what's been lost, it's a much more complicated process than that. You wouldn't even be scratching the surface by mentioning how the submarines need to be automated or operated remotely, need to run on renewable energy, and need to be able to filter the saltwater from the freshwater.

At the moment, the Snapmaws in Horizon Zero Dawn are only useful for killing anyone who has the gall to swim too close to their island. However, strap one of these devices to them and they're suddenly serving a purpose after all - not to mention that Aloy's rampant Snapmaw genocide becomes a crime against the environment.

Horizon Zero Dawn provides a cautiously optimistic view of life on Earth with a healthy dose of warnings sprinkled in. Society does manage to reform after the collapse of civilization, but only due to the scientists who worked tirelessly to make it happen. And even then, it doesn't work as well as they expected. In a message to NBC News, the leader of the submarine project said that while these devices could curb emissions, "to stop global warming we still have to reduce carbon emissions throughout the world." This is true of these two projects as well as hundreds of others in development right now; scientific advancements may help us counteract the negative effects that humanity has had on the environment, but they cannot fully replace other major changes, like the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Horizon Zero Dawn might not ever fully come true, but it does remind us that humanity is only alive as long as the Earth is, too.
